Emrys Morgan Cup - Felinfach 2 v 1 Tywyn-Bryncrug Res

After five weeks without a game it was a somewhat ring rusty Felinfach team that took to the field against Aberystwyth Division 1 side Tywyn-Bryncrug Reserves. On paper it was the visitors who would have started out as clear favourites to get through this 3rd round fixture but Felinfach clearly had other ideas and set about the game in a very confident fashion. After dominating the first 20 minutes they deservedly went ahead after Denzil Davies picked up on a loose ball just outside the area to smash the ball high into the Tywyn-Bryncrug net.
Somewhat surprisingly Felinfach then failed to push on and make their territorial advantage pay and Tywyn-Bryncrug slowly got themselves back into the game with a couple of half chances. With ten minutes to go before half time they got themselves level when a corner from the right was firmly headed against the bar before being followed up from six yards out.
To their credit, Felinfach started the second half at a blistering pace and had a number of chances to get back in front. A determined Tywyn-Bryncrug defence held them at bay particularly their impressive and busy keeper Ben Richards. Tywyn-Bryncrug also had their chances mainly from long balls aimed towards their big centre forwards which Felinfach had to concentrate hard on ensuring there were no slip ups.
With 20 minutes remaining, Felinfach deservedly got back in front when a free kick from halfway by Richard Haywood was glanced home for his first ever goal for the first team by striker Richard Brennan. Felinfach then replaced tired legs on a heavy pitch in the next 10 minutes with 3 substitutes but found themselves having to play out the last 10 minutes of the game with first 10 men and then for the last 5 minutes with only 9 due to late injuries to Dale Fitzpatrick and Lee Forrester.
With time running out and Tywyn-Bryncrug seizing the opportunity to push forward in search of an equaliser it took an excellent last ditch save from young keeper Sean Thomas to see Felinfach hold on for what overall was a thoroughly deserved victory and a very fine team performance considering the heavy pitch and lack of match action over the last five weeks.
Felinfach can now look forward to a place in the last 16 for the first time in many years where they will now travel to in-form Talgarth Rovers early in the New Year. |
